This is an unpublished and, as far as I know, never-submitted short-short I rediscovered in my files. I think I may have written it at Banff during the Writing With Style workshop on writing science fiction with Robert J. Sawyer, the same workshop out of which came Marseguro.
The landing pod settled in the middle of the alien battlefield in an expanding cloud of copper-colored dust, its antigrav moaning away to nothing and its liftjets sighing into silence.
Vultor Caruso watched the pod’s descent through binoculars from the ancient camouflaged pillbox buried in the nearest hill, his lips set in a thin, tight sneer. “Damn claim-jumpers,” he muttered; after years ...

Yes, I'm in Banff, enjoying a
Self-Directed Writing Residency at the Banff Centre. And, no, I haven't posted anything about it because...well, mainly because I kind of got out of the posting habit while on a long vacation in August and then I promptly became very very busy getting through my editing tasks for
Fine Lifestyles Regina magazine.
But, hey! I'm here! And here's a post! Which would be even better if I had a photo to upload, but the only couple of photos I've taken were with my cellphone and I didn't bring the cable allowing me to transfer that to my netbook, so, sorry.
I may have been a failure as a blogger at Banff thus ...

I'm tickled pink with the announcement that
Robert J. Sawyer, a friend of mine and Canada's most acclaimed science fiction writer,
will be writer-in-residence at the Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon this June and July.If you're an aspiring writer, book a time to talk to Rob. I twice took part in his classes on writing science fiction at the
Banff Centre (part of the
Writing With Style program) and he's an excellent teacher, critiquer and mentor. (And as I've recounted before, Marseguro was born from a writing exercise one morning in one of his classes, which is why Sawyer's Point is a prominent landmark in a key scene in that novel, and the name ...

If there was a theme to this year’s Wine and Food Festival at the
Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, from which my wife and I just returned (feeling very well wined and dined indeed, thank you very much) it was terroir.Terroir is a French word which has no English equivalent (and the French like it that way). At Banff, Ruth Souroujon, vice-president of marketing for
Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, defined terroir as “the total natural growing environment of any viticultural site that allows a grape variety to uniquely express itself.”Winemakers’ focus on terroir makes sense when you realize that the idea that the same grapes grown in different locations result in different-tasting wines is central to ...

The subs from Jumpoff Station hadn't yet arrived when Emily and Farley and their unexpectedly still-living prisoner reached the shattered pier.Current word count: 66,153New words this session: 1,413Percentage of novel completed: 66.1Got in an hour today after the wine and food festival wrapped up. It was a fabulous time as always, but a bit wearing. Much as I enjoy the tastings and the food, by the end of the final lunch I'm more than ready to sit quietly somewhere with a nice uncomplicated drink that doesn't require you to think so much...which is exactly what I did, working on the new novel in the old lobby of the hotel with a nice simple Diet ...

No blogging today, and no writing, because we've been tasting wine and eating great food at the International Wine and Food Festival at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Here's where we had lunch: Mt. Stephen's Hall. Not bad, eh? (There's currently a wedding dance going on down there--our room is right above it, alas, and we can hear some spillover from the music. But I'm sure it'll quit soon...)More tomorrow! Maybe some good snowy pictures of Banff, since there's a snowfall warning in effect for today and tomorrow. Glad we're not planning to drive home until Monday...More photos

"Maybe you do," said the girl behind Richard, and pushed him forward.Current word count: 64,740New words this session: 776Percentage of novel completed: 64.7A short session today (and none yesterday). We spent yesterday on the road to Calgary, and today we went on to Banff for the International Wine and Food Festival at the Banff Springs Hotel, but I did manage to squeeze in a bit of writing this morning while my wife and daughter enjoyed the waterslide at our Calgary hotel.Probably won't manage a photo today, either, but tomorrow look for a picture or two from Banff!
