Talk about a pleasant surprise. I fired up the iPad briefly before my concert at WorldCon in Reno today (I sang the Donald Swann-composed cycle of songs from Tolkien, called The Road Goes Ever On) and discovered the first review I've yet seen of my upcoming Lee Arthur Chane fantasy novel Magebane: but it's not just any review: it's a starred review in Publishers Weekly! Some highlights:
Chane makes a splash with this spectacular epic-feeling stand-alone fantasy debut...Double and triple crosses, fast-paced action, and powerful moral conviction will have readers hanging on every word.
Read the whole thing!
Made my day, that's for sure!

Which means I get to spend the next few days re-reading my own book, and hoping the only errors I see are little ones that are easily corrected, and not major "what-was-I-thinking-aargh-it's-too-late-to-fix-it-now!" ones.
Here's the title and byline from the title page. I love the little airship logo, which appears at the start of each chapter:
And here's the inside-front-flap copy, a small excerpt from fairly early on in the book:
CLOSER AND CLOSER DREW THE WALL OF FOG.
Periodically Anton lit the burner to keep them at five thousand feet. Finally the Professor said, “I think it is time to ascend.”
Anton pulled back on the throttle. The flame roared, ...

New American Library (under whose umbrella my publisher
DAW Books falls) has distributed
its catalogue to booksellers for its October releases, which include Magebane. This image shows the relevant page.
The text reads:
Four centuries ago, Magic was banished from the land...
that May be about to change.
Four centures ago, the world changed. A devastating war swept the lands, and the MageLords, who had long ruled by virtue of their spell powers, were driven to a distant place, separated from those they had ruled by a magical Barrier. With magic banished from the rest of the world, the MageLords became mere legend and people turned to science to improve their ...

Just got this today: the cover art for Magebane, the first fantasy novel by my alter ego Lee Arthur Chane. It's by Paul Young (and you can
see more of his artwork here). The cover blurb will change slightly, because in the course of revisions that reference to "four centuries" became "eight centuries," but otherwise, this is what you'll see on the shelves come October 4.
Do I like it? Well, yeah! The airship isn't a perfect rendition of the airship in my head, but that's hardly surprising. It's got the right feel. And it's definitely eye-catching!
I'm already discussing ideas for the second Lee ...

Well, the final bio for my alter ego, Lee Arthur Chane, is rather staid compared to the fanciful flights of fancy I could have indulged in.
In fact, it's my own bio, just tweaked a little to emphasize the fact that Chane is going to be known (hopefully) as a fantasy writer:
Born in the mystical mountains of New Mexico, taken on an epic journey from there to the wide-open and oddly named land of Saskatchewan as a child, familiar with both blazing heat and bitter cold, Lee Arthur Chane might have been destined to be a fantasy writer. But in his personal quest to become one, he’s also studied journalism in ...

...my first adult fantasy novel for DAW under the nom de plume Lee Arthur Chane. Here's how DAW is describing it:
The kingdom of Evrenfels is the last bastion of magic in the world, cut off from the outside by the Great Barrier through which magic cannot penetrate.
For centuries, the Magelords have ruled their kingdom with an iron hand while beyond the Barrier, magic and the Magelords have faded into an almost forgotten myth, replaced by low-level technology. Now all of that is about to change, for one man, Lord Falk, the Minister of Safety—the most powerful of the Magelords—has plans to assassinate the king and his heir, to break down the Barrier, and to conquer the lands beyond.
All it will ...

It's not exactly a secret, since I've been telling everyone everywhere for some time, but my next book from
DAW, the fantasy novel Magebane, will not be appearing under the name Edward Willett, but under a pseudonym, Lee Arthur Chane.
This is a first for me, though it's pretty common; some writers have several pen names. There are many reasons for them, but in my case it's because Edward Willett started his career as a space opera/science fiction writer, and notwithstanding the
Aurora Award for Marseguro and the nomination for Terra Insegura, didn't make as much of a splash as either he or his publisher would have ...

Ever hear of the Ninety-Nine Rule? Formulated by Tom Cargill of Bell Labs, it goes like this:
"The first 90 percent of the code accounts for the first 90 percent of the development time. The remaining 10 percent of the code accounts for the other 90 percent of the development time."
Humorously, that adds up to 180 percent of the development time, but even if you correct the math, you end up with something that's absolutely, undeniably true about pretty much any creative endeavor you wish to examine: it's the last 10 percent that eats up 90 percent of the time.
It's ...

Yes, I'm in Banff, enjoying a
Self-Directed Writing Residency at the Banff Centre. And, no, I haven't posted anything about it because...well, mainly because I kind of got out of the posting habit while on a long vacation in August and then I promptly became very very busy getting through my editing tasks for
Fine Lifestyles Regina magazine.
But, hey! I'm here! And here's a post! Which would be even better if I had a photo to upload, but the only couple of photos I've taken were with my cellphone and I didn't bring the cable allowing me to transfer that to my netbook, so, sorry.
I may have been a failure as a blogger at Banff thus ...

Well, got a couple of nice bits of news this week. First, I've been asked by
Pure Speculation, a science fiction convention in Edmonton, to be their Author Guest of Honour, filling in for
Spider Robinson, who has had to bow out because of the need to concentrate on helping his wife, Jeanne, as she undergoes a round of chemotherapy.
I'm hardly in the same league as Spider, writer-wise, which makes it doubly an honour to be asked. I don't know too many details about programming yet, except that I'll be singing in the Friday night cabaret and I'll be interviewed by Barb Galler-Smith at some point.
Pure Speculation runs October 2 to 4 at the Shaw Convention ...
