Two more Follies performances left…

After a week of rehearsals and performances mixed in with other stuff, I was more tired after last night's show than I think can remember ever being before. But a good night's sleep took care of that, and now I'm looking forward to the final show tonight. It’s the second night of Follies!

Last night's opening performance of Lyric Musical Theatre's production of Stephen Sondheim's rarely-stage musical masterpiece Follies went very well. We had a decent-sized audience for a Wednesday opening and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. So now it's on to the second night. You can't buy tickets online for tonight's performance any more, but you can still get tickets at the door! 7:30 p.m. at the University Theatre, Riddell Centre, University of Regina. Tickets are $25. And you can still buy tickets online for the remaining shows tomorrow and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The photo, by the way, shows Amanda Dancsok as The Showgirl.

My preview of the Youth Ballet of Saskatchewan’s year-end performances…

...is in today's Regina LeaderPost. An excerpt: More than 350 dance students from age three on up will take to the stage of the Conexus Arts Centre this weekend as the Youth Ballet Company of Saskatchewan, celebrating its 25th anniversary, presents two year-end performances. "There's a little bit of duplication, but not very much," says artistic director Connie Moker Wernikowski. ### The Youth Ballet's elite pre-professional company will perform Ballet for Life, created by a world-famous choreographer, the late Maurice Bejar, in tribute to the many friends he lost to AIDS. It's set to music by Queen that lead singer Freddy Mercury wrote when he knew he was dying of AIDS. Bejar granted permission to one of his students, Artur Kuraczewski, to re-set the ...

Follies opens tonight!

It's opening night for Lyric Musical Theatre of Regina's production of Stephen Sondheim's legendary musical Follies. We're quite certain this is the first time the show has ever been done in Saskatchewan, and there's a strong possibility it's the first time there's been a fully-staged version of it in Canada (although there have certainly been concert versions of it, most recently at last summer's Shaw Festival). Here's how the website sondheim.com describes the show:  “This musical, with a book by James Goldman, takes place at a reunion of ...

It’s Magic!

I have occasionally made reference to the fact that I can sing, and now I have vidographic proof! This is from Lyric Musical Theatre's fundraising brunch, which ran the last two Sundays at the Hotel Saskatchewan. Enjoy!Got a little choked up there at the end because I made the tactically problematic though strategically sound decision to look at my wife and daughter in the audience. *Sniff*

A blast from the past

Someone sent me this photo of Midnight Sun, the a cappella group I sang with in the early 1990s (some rather poor recordings of our music can be heard here).I'm the one closest to the camera, and as you can see, I haven't aged a--Oh, never mind.

Photo of the Day that was Actually in the LeaderPost Yesterday: Let There Be Light

This photo by Roy Antal was in the Regina LeaderPost yesterday. Yep, that's me at the left, with Rob Huber behind the piano and Robert Ursan seated. The three of us will be the hosts for Saturday night's "Let There Be Light" fundraising show for the Regina Performing Arts Centre.

Photographic proof I was in Beauty and the Beast

Just in case you thought I was making up all that stuff about appearing in Persephone Theatre's production of Beauty and the Beast up in Saskatoon in December, I present photographic proof! Here I am as Monsieur D'Arque, keeper of the insane asylum, a.k.a. (in the eyes of the four-year-old son of one of my fellow cast members) "the big vampire."(And yes, that's my own hair, although I did wear a rug during "Human Again"...not a toupee, though, an actual rug. Because I was playing...well, a rug.)...

The first sentence I wrote today…

I've been a bit slack on these entries, but I have a good excuse: this is opening week for Persephone Theatre's Beauty and the Beast, so my focus has been pretty much entirely on the show. We had our first show in front of an audience Tuesday (an invited dress rehearsal), then previews Wednesday and last night, plus a school matinee yesterday afternoon (a lot of fun with a show like this; the kids loved it).Tonight is opening night, which means this afternoon we had our final rehearsal. Which also means that starting tomorrow I'll have a lot more time free during the day, which is good, because I have writing that needs doing: both ...
