Why, yes, I haven't been posting much beyond my columns: thanks for noticing! It seems like since I got back from the
Canadian Chamber Choir tour I've been either too busy or too tired to do much beyond the occasional blog post. But perhaps that can change now that I have finished one thing and am moving on to another (well, another three, actually). The "one thing" I have finished is my book for
Enslow Publishers called Disease Detectives, part of their new Extreme Science series. I sent in the manuscript today. And, yes, I "repurposed" one of the chapters from it for this week's science column on what it's like to work in a Level ...

Some time ago I was selected to be one of the mentors for the
Saskatchewan Writers Guild's first Online Youth Mentorship Program. I enjoyed it very much.I worked with three young writers, Danita Stallard of Estevan, James Waldner of Biggar, and Arnav Jatukaran of Regina. I had at least one face-to-face meeting with all of them, but most of our work was carried out online: they'd send me stuff, I'd critique it and point them to online (and other) resources, I'd answer any questions they might have, etc.Not surprisingly, I guess, two of my mentees were focused on the SF and fantasy field: Danita is particularly interested in fantasy, while James is focused on military space opera. ...

This morning I drove up to Lipton, about 90 km northeast of Regina, for two readings at Lipton School: one to Grades 5 to 8, and one to Grade 9 to 12. I read a little bit of Andy Nebula to the younger group and a bit of Jimi Hendrix: Kiss the Sky to the older group. Two readings in the space of an hour meant very short sessions, but that was OK. And I guess the readings went OK, too. The younger group had more questions than the older, but nobody threw anything or snored out loud, and what more could you ask?I took my camera. Here's the road to Lipton (more accurately, about 20 kilometres west ...

I had a pretty good turnout tonight at McNally Robinson here in Saskatoon for the reading from my book A Safe and Prosperous Future: 100 years of engineering and geoscience achievements in Saskatchewan. The local Cosmopolitan Club came out en masse, and a few others showed up as well (including some people I went to school with), and I sold/signed several books, so not a bad evening. Here I am, hard at work doing that authorial thing (you can tell I'm literary because I'm wearing black):

...at 7 p.m. at
McNally Robinson Bookstore. This visit is to promote
A Safe and Prosperous Future: 100 years of engineering and geoscience achievements in Saskatchewan.I'll probably be reading the chapter on Saskatoon's bridges, in honour of the location. The reading will take place in the Prairie Ink restaurant attached to the bookstore. I understand that 18 members of the Cosmopolitan Club are coming, and there should be some local members of
APEGS (the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan) on hand, so at least I know there will be more ...

The reading went fine, but the best part of the evening was on my way out of the lobby. I stopped at the front desk to ask the young woman there if she would call me a cab. Which she did. I was carrying Lost in Translation, of course, and she noticed it and said, "That's a good book. I liked it." It was then my great pleasure to tell her that I, in fact, had written it. She didn't even realize the author was from Saskatchewan.A very nice ego-boo moment indeed.Feeling quite cocky, I got in the taxi, went off and had a fine dinner at the cafe attached to
McNally Robinson bookstore. Then ...

So here I am in Saskatoon, blogging to you live from the Radisson. The bus ride up was uneventful, if foggy in spots (see the previous post with a shot I rather hastily took out the bus window as we pulled into Davidson). I arrived a good 45 minutes before I needed to be at the TV station for my noon interview on CTV Sasaktoon's News at Noon with Jeff Rogstad, but not having anywhere else to go, I just went to the station and waited in the green room, which I soon regretted, since it's tiny, offers nothing in the way of refreshments (a coffee urn would be nice) and has rock-hard furniture in it dating from, at ...

...at
McNally Robinson Bookstore, from
Lost in Translation. 7 p.m. If you're in the vicinity, come say hi!To my astonishment, I just discovered yesterday that McNally Robinson chose to put my picture (the same one you see over there in the left sidebar) in their ad for upcoming events at their stores in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Calgary that ran in the Globe and Mail's "Books" section on Saturday.Since the Globe and Mail we get is printed in Winnipeg and contains content specific to the West, I doubt the ad was seen anywhere east of Winnipeg, but still, it was a nice surprise. I'm not sure why they chose to highlight me out of all ...
