Every now and then I attend a science fiction convention, and when I do, I like to talk about it in this column, as part of my ongoing evangelical campaign to raise the profile of science fiction and win the genre new readers.

Well, I just finished a doozy of a convention, the grandaddy of them all: the 67th annual World Science Fiction Convention in Montreal, a.k.a. Anticipation.

Yes, there were people in costumes (though I only saw one Star Trek costume—an original series one, at that—and not a single Klingon). And, yes, the media tended to focus on those people. Which is fine: they’re the eye-catching ones, and they’re an important part of science fiction fandom. (And as someone who loves performing in musical theatre, I am hardly one to disparage the wearing of costumes.)

But there is so much more at a World Science Fiction convention. In fact, it’s a veritable buffet of goodness for the intellectually curious: where else, for instance, could you listen to Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman in conversation with British science fiction writer Charles Stross?

To extend the buffet metaphor further, WorldCon is an all-you-can-eat-and-then-some buffet. At any given moment, there could be a couple of dozen choices of things to do.

For example, at 2 p.m. on Friday, among the offerings were a presentation by McGill students of science posters they had created; a panel on creating science fiction haiku; “My Parents Made Me Do It” (about growing up in science fiction fandom); “SF in French-Speaking America;” and “In Conversation with Tarl Wayne” (the fan artist guest of honor).

During that same time, the aforementioned Paul Krugman was giving a presentation on how reading science fiction led him into becoming an economist, and there was a panel on the “Greatest Fan Writer,” several author readings, a presentation on “Computing Before Computers,” a panel on “Food: Ancient, Modern, Future, Near and Far,” a writers’ workshop on creating alien languages, a panel on modern graphic design in publishing, and a costuming panel on embellishment techniques.

There were also panels in French, a look at the fiction of Neil Gaiman, this year’s Guest of Honour, a program for teens on how to present yourself in frontof an audience; a panel on “The Future of Gender,” a presentation by Prof. Gail Chmura, a climate-change specialist at McGill University, a panal on environmental issues in science fiction and fantasy, a discussion of who should win the Hugo Award (science fiction’s top fan-voted award) in the Short Form Dramatic Presentation category, a panel on what the people behind the camera do in television and movie production, and a panel introducing book binding, archiving and preservation.

That was just one hour to hour-and-a-half time frame—and I left a few things out.

See, here’s what people who rely on media stereotypes of science fiction fans (you know, can’t get a date, live in their mother’s basement, etc.) don’t realize: the kinds of people who are interested in science fiction are often the kinds of people who interested in everything.

Among the panels I personally attended were one on star maps from antiquity to today; a rather depressing discussion on the outlook for manned space flight in the U.S. post-shuttle; and a panel discussing the exploration of Mars from the persepective of the Canadian Space Agency.

At its heart, though, WorldCon is still focused on books. The premiere award of the weekend is the Hugo Award for Best Novel, which was won by Neil Gaiman for The Graveyard Book.

Among the other awards given out at WorldCon: the Aurora Awards for the best Canadian science fiction and fantasy…and I was honored to receive the Aurora for Best Long-Form Work in English for my novel Marseguro (DAW Books).

Obviously, that alone made the 67th annual World Science Fiction Convention the best in history, as far as I was concerned.

But if you’re interested enough to read this column every week, there’s a good chance you’d enjoy a science fiction convention even without winning an award.

Next time there’s one in your neck of the woods, why not give it a try?

Today’s highlight would ordinarily have been the Hugo Awards, presented this evening here at the World Science Fiction Convention in Montreal, but as it happened we were rather late arriving at the Hugos because I ended up having a dinner meeting with my edito,r Sheila Gilbert, and her fellow publisher at DAW Books, Betsy Wollheim. Among many other things, we discussed my–or, at lest, my alter ego Lee Arthur Chane’s–next book, Magebane, and Sheila suggested I send along some of what I have so far after I told her I’d been struggling a bit with it. I expect that to be very helpful and was grateful she suggested it.

By the time we got to the Hugos, the place was full to the walls, and so we ended up sitting on the floor near an exit. Still, we saw all the major awards. Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book won the Best Novel Hugo. It’s already a Newbery winner, of course. I’ve read it, and it’s a fine book, but I really think the Hugo should have gone to Neal Stephenson’s Anathem. So did Gaiman: he said he’d been so sure Anathem would win he hadn’t even bothered to prepare a speech.

The other highlight of the day was a reading of a play by Hayden Trenholm, winner of the Aurora Award last year for best short-form work in English and my fellow nominee for long-form work this year. Trophies was written for Calgary’s Lunchbox Theatre a few years ago, and is a vampire story with an ironic twist, a lot of humor, and a thoroughly obnoxious “alpha male” stockbroker-type character: that would be me. It was fun to do. (For the second time, actually; I was part of a previous reading at ConVersion in Calgary a few years ago, a reading in which my wife also took part.) Today’s cast also included Hayden, his publisher (Virginia O’Dine of Bundoran Press) and Canadian writer Susan Forrest. A Good Time Was Had By All, and we had a pretty fair turnout, too.

I also sat in the autograph area, but signed very little (I signed more books elsewhere, actually). I sold every copy of Lost in Translation, Marseguro and Terra Insegura I had brought with me, and Chapters, which had no copies of my books when I arrived, managed to scare up a handful of books which also sold out. Obviously I should have brought more, but usually I end up lugging the things home with me!

Those were today’s highlights. All that’s left now is my joint reading with Alison Sinclair…at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. Not exactly prime time for drawing an audience, but I hope that maybe someone will show up.

One day to go…

Well, you can’t have a much better day at a WorldCon than I had today, short of winning a Hugo: tonight I won the Aurora Award for the best long-form work of science fiction or fantasy by a Canadian writer in English in 2008. The award was presented at a banquet this evening, and my publishers, Betsy Wollheim and Sheila Gilbert of DAW Books, were both present (Sheila is also my editor, and that’s her in the photo with me and the award at left).

I’d give you the complete list of winners as I usually do, except as one of the nominees, I didn’t take notes or photos tonight. I’ll post them when I have a chance. But in my acceptance speech I made a point of thanking Robert J. Sawyer, who was a nominee in the same category tonight, because it was in his Banff Centre class in writing science fiction that Marseguro began, and I also did my best to acknowledge all the other nominees in my category, Douglas Smith, Ursula Pflug and Hayden Trenholm, urging people to read them all, because, I said, “Canadian science fiction deserves it.” Of course, in the process I forgot to thank my wife and daughter, and I fumbled introducing Sheila and Betsy from DAW, but it’s amazing how hard it is to think when you win an award.

Speaking of my daughter, I think she was more anxious than I was as my category (which, by the way, was announced by none other than well-known cigar-smoking puppet Ed the Sock) approached, and she apparently, though I didn’t see it, reacted with even more glee.

Afterward, of course, once I had Tweeted and Facebooked and phoned Mom, I headed over to the Delta Hotel for the SF Canada/Robert J. Sawyer Books party. I was also briefly in the SFWA Suite, where Analog and Asimov‘s were hosting a party, until it was closed down by the hotel. Oops. (Apparently a few people hung on in near-silence and seclusion.) It’s amazing what carrying a pointy, shiny award around an SF convention does to encourage people to talk to you. Two parties was my limit, though. (Pointy, you ask? The Aurora Award is famous for its sharp points, which are a) useful for forcing your way through crowds, b) an exellent means of self-defense should you be mugged on your way to your hotel, and c) known to shred clothing if you pack it injudiciously in your luggage. Fortunately, since we drove, I should be able to take it back in one piece).

Oh, I did do a few other things today. I went to a rather depressing panel on “After the Shuttle,” which spent much of its time pointing out that NASA’s plans for replacing the shuttle are inadequate, and therefore NASA astronauts won’t be going anywhere other than low-Earth-orbit riding Russian Soyuzes any time soon, manned the SFWA table for an hour and then signed books (not very many, but some) at the SFWA table for another hour, and went to the DAW Books upcoming books presentation.

It’ll be hard to have a better day than today at the this year’s WorldCon. But I’ll give it the old college try tomorrow!

And my deepest thanks to everyone who voted for Marseguro! You’ve made my year.

Guess I did fill out the form saying I wanted to particpate after all. I’d been trying to remember…

UPDATE: Apparently that form is premature; it lists program applicants who have been processed (so it DOES prove I filled out the form) but not all those who appear there will necessarily be on the program, nor has everyone who filled out the program form yet appeared on that page.

I only attended one panel, on YA Fantasy, and I didn’t stay to the end because I thought I should drop in on the SF Canada meeting going on next door.

Sharyn November, editor of Firebird Books, made a…forceful…moderator (that’s her in the centre of the photo). Also on the panel were (left to right) Garth Nix, Linda DeMeulemeester, Anne Hoppe, editor at Harper Children’s, and Kathryn Sullivan. If I were to sum up the panel in one sentence (which, indeed, I am about to), I would say, “There’s a huge amount of YA fantasy being published, a lot of it is drek, but the best stuff will last.” Which isn’t exactly earth-shattering news, but it still made for an interesting panel, thanks to the people involved. Worth noting that the room was extremely full; there’s lots of interest.

After that, I just kind of wandered around and chatted with various people (and had lunch with other people) until it was time to meet with my editor from DAW Books, Sheila Gilbert. No word yet on the proposed third Marseguro-related book, but I was encouraged to hear that she really likes the fantasy proposal I gave her (tentative title: Magebane). Nothing firm yet, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Oh, and she promised to send me the cover art for Terra Insegura when she gets back to New York, so I’ll be posting that soon!

This evening was also spent in the company of Sheila, along with Betsy Wollheim, Tad Williams, Violette Malan, P.R. Frost, and artist Todd Lockwood. We all (at DAW’s expense) had dinner at the River Cafe, which I had recommended and which, much to my relief, everyone loved. It was a nice leisurely three-hour meal, which means I just got back an hour or so ago.

So that was my day. Not very informative if you’re looking for a con report, but I certainly had a good time and I’m excited that I might get to tackle a fantasy soon.

Meatier con-blogging tomorrow, when I should have photos from the World Fantasy Awards banquet, plus a list of winners.</div

By way of beefing up this post, here’s the obligatory View From My Hotel Window…at night. Hallowe’en night, actually. Ooh, spooky!

That glowing blue thing at the right, by the way, is a transit station–a train stop. It has LED lights that constantly shift through myriad colours. Glancing out now, for instance, they’re reddish-purple; in the time it took me to type that, they turned green. Purely decorative, as far as I can see, but pretty cool!

First thing I did this morning was take the obligatory Photo From My Hotel Room Window.

Once I’d been out and had coffee and all that stuff (I had a nice chat with artist James Beveridge while I drank my second cup) I took a few turns through the dealer’s room (and took a photo). It’s quite different from the one at the World Science Fiction Convention: smaller, of course, since there are only about a seventh as many people here as there would be at even a smallish WorldCon, but also much more heavily focused on books–pretty much to the exclusion of anything else, actually.

At 1 p.m. I was supposed to give a reading, but alas only one person showed up (Dominique Benoit, who is my co-blogger on the SF Canada members’ news blog), so instead of reading, I just chatted with her. I hooked up with friends for a chat in the lounge for a while, then met with agent Sally Harding–not that I’m looking for an agent (Ethan Ellenberg is my agent) but simply to get acquainted, since we’re both members of SF Canada. She was just picking people’s brains for whatever information they might have about the field–I didn’t have much to offer, I fear. She also helped me out with a few names for people with the Canadian publishers who might be interested in a YA project I’ve got.

I went out for dinner with several of the members of the Imaginative Fiction Writers Association (Barbara Hambly was at our table, too, but I didn’t get to talk to her). If not for World Fantasy people, the Bear Kilt (yes, we went there again) would have been pretty much empty, so nice to know we’re helping to support the local economy.

At 8 p.m. it was time for the mass autograph session. This is apparently a World Fantasy tradition: all the attending authors in one big room, signing their little hearts out for anyone who wants an autograph. Thanks to having my book in some of the book bags, mostly, I signed eight or nine copies of Marseguro, plus a couple of programs. I sat between Leslie Carmichael and Simon Rose, and thus at least had interesting people to chat with over the two hours we were there. Garth Nix wasn’t too far away, so I sneaked a picture of him, although I didn’t get a chance to tell him how much I enjoyed his Abhorsen books.

Then it was up to the SF Canada party in the Con Suite, a quick call home, another turn at the SF Canada, and back for bed.

I do hope to take in a couple of panels tomorrow, and tomorrow I’ll also be meeting with my editor from DAW, Sheila Gilbert, to discuss my next book after Terra Insegura. Then tomorrow night is the DAW dinner at the River Cafe, and if I get back in time, I’ll sing a few Tolkien songs (the Donald Swann settings that I’ve done several times before) at the Tolkien-themed event that will run most of the evening.

I continue to enjoy the convention, and I think it’s been worthwhile business-wise, too. Another update tomorrow night!

Holy library, Batman! Look at this thing.

And yes, that is a copy of my very own novel Marseguro on top: DAW graciously provided 300 of them for giveaway at this con. Which I hope means someone will at least stop by for an autograph at tomorrow’s mass autograph session.

I had some lunch, met up with all kinds of people I know from here and there, checked out the dealer’s room (where I put my books among the many other worthy titles on the SF Canada table), checked out the rather small art show, and eventually hooked up for dinner with a bunch of (primarily) IFWits, as members of the Imaginative Fiction Writers Association here in Calgary are known. We went to the Bear Kilt pub, just half a block from he hotel.

Robert J. Sawyer was part of the group, and headed off a bit ahead of us to get ready for a panel at 8 p.m. on science fiction tropes in fantasy (or possibly fantasy tropes in SF), entitled “Aargh! My alien is an elf!” Besides Rob, panelists included Joe Haldeman, S.M. Stirling and Walter Jon Williams, and if the topic was quickly exhausted, the interesting conversation was not. Joe Haldeman compared Star Wars to Hiroshima in its effect on science fiction and warned of the coming hordes of human-herding networked insectoid robots (I’m paraphrasing), Rob Sawyer urged writers not to worry about their fiction being dated if they include details of the real world, because realistically, most fiction has a short shelf-life anyway, S.M. Stirling came up with a new, much less succinct but certainly descriptive name for the Mundane Science Fiction movement, and Walter Jon Williams tried to keep things moving along as moderator, with minimal success if the goal was to stay on topic, but much merriment (mixed with existential despair), nevertheless.

I took a break to phone home, then an hour later (who starts a panel at 10 p.m.?) it was time for the panel I moderated, on “Canadian Fantasy: Is There Such a Thing?” Panelists, besides myself, were Candas Jane Dorsey, Ann Marsden, Marie Jakober and Karl Johanson. We agreed that there is, indeed, such a thing, talked about a few ways in which Canadian fantasy might be recognized (darker themes, more anti-heros, a fascination with and influence from landscape, more focus on characterization), but agreed (I think) that the differences were less pronounced now between fantasy from Canada and that from elsewhere (read: USA) than they once were, and also discussed particulars of the Canadian publishing scene when it comes to fantasy. A Good Time Was Had By All, as the rural correspondents for my old newspaper, the Weyburn Review, liked to say. And A Pretty Good Crowd Was On Hand, Too, for an early panel (con-wise) that was also late (time-wise).

Tomorrow I have a reading, a meeting, the autograph session and the SF Canada party. Plus, of course, there are panels and things and lots of people talk to. My DAW editor, Sheila Gilbert, will arrive tomorrow sometime, and I’m expecting to get together with her at some point over the weekend. And then there’s that DAW dinner at the River Cafe to look forward to Saturday night…yum!
