One of the panels I'm scheduled to be on at
Denvention 3, the World Science Fiction Convention in Denver August 6 to 10, is called "Writers reading from their juvenalia." Juvenalia is defined by Merriam-Webster as "compositions produced in the artist's or author's youth."But not everyone who reads this blog will be in Denver. And so, just so you don't miss out, I present a taste of what you could hear, if only you were coming: the openings to the three novels I wrote in high school, essentially one each in Grades 10, 11 and 12 (although there was a certain amount of overlap).First up: a book I began on September 5, 1973, when I ...

No, I won't be handing them out in the hallways at
World Fantasy Convention in Calgary in October;
my publisher, DAW, has taken care of that for me. I just received confirmation today that the convention organizers have received 300 copies of Marseguro for including in the World Fantasy Con book bags.That's not enough for everyone to get a copy, but it's certainly enough for, well, 300 people to get a copy.Great exposure, I reckon. I'm very pleased.

To whit:Few in our contemporary culture spend as much time as the readers - and writers - of SF regularly considering the repercussions of technological and social change, or environmental transformation, or the ideological inflection in popular cultural products - no matter how frequently the press and politicians comment on such matters.Thank you for noticing.

As you may have noticed, blogging has taken a back seat to other activities recently while I was acting in
Beauty and the Beast up in Saskatoon, but I'm settling back into a regular home routine again and ready to start off a new year of Hassenpfeffering.And it's looking to be quite the year. First off,
Marseguro will come out on February 5 from
DAW Books. My deadline for turning in the sequel, Terra Insegura, is just ten days later.My
children's biography of Janis Joplin should be out from Enslow before long, and I'm also finishing up my book on the Mutiny on the Bounty for Enslow, and have contracts to ...
