One thing ends, new things begin

Why, yes, I haven’t been posting much beyond my columns: thanks for noticing!

It seems like since I got back from the Canadian Chamber Choir tour I’ve been either too busy or too tired to do much beyond the occasional blog post. But perhaps that can change now that I have finished one thing and am moving on to another (well, another three, actually).

The “one thing” I have finished is my book for Enslow Publishers called Disease Detectives, part of their new Extreme Science series. I sent in the manuscript today. And, yes, I “repurposed” one of the chapters from it for this week’s science column on what it’s like to work in a Level 4 lab.

It’s not really done, since there are still photos to deal with, and probably some rewriting, but at least the bulk is done and off to the editor.

And the new things that are about to begin? Well, I’ve still got another book on the go for Enslow, this one about the mutiny on the Bounty; I’ve got a new novel for DAW, Terra Insegura, the sequel to Marseguro, to write between now and rather frighteningly early in the new year; and Friday I’m off to Saskatoon to begin rehearsing Beauty and the Beast at Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon.

I’m actually hoping to get a lot of writing done while I’m up there, since I won’t have much else to do with my evenings, not exactly being the party type. So starting next week, expect to see the return of “The First Sentence I Wrote Today” as I plunge (literally, since so much of it happens underwater) into Terra Insegura. Between that and finishing up the Bounty mutiny book, I may be feeling quite waterlogged by New Year’s.

Yesterday I did a very successful school reading/presentation in Esterhazy. I read “The Wind,” the short story that was recently published in The Book of Dark Wisdom. It’s a bit gruesomier than I would normally read at a school, but that’s because I usually read to younger kids than yesterday’s bunch, who ranged from Grade 10 to Grade 12. It seemed to go over well, and I had lots of good questions. They were attentive, too.

“The Wind” seemed particularly apropos since I used almost no gas going there, sailing along with an 80-kph wind behind me, but I used lots coming back!

Alas, I forgot my camera. But I’ll have it with me in Saskatoon. Expect pictures, especially once we move into the brand-new River Landing theatre!

And expect more blog posts!

I’m looking forward to the return of the “The First Sentence I Wrote Today.” Will you be doing word counts, too? That’s so inspiring (and I’ve adopted it for my own work).

You know, sometimes I get tired just reading about what you’re up to!
