It’s my birthday, and I’ll blog if I want to

Yes, today marks the completion of 1/20th of my first millennium. Or half a century. Personally I prefer the first formulation. And, yes, today is also the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. My tenth birthday present, and what a terrific present it was. I remember watching the coverage on our little black …

For just $17.95, my parents got…me!

I’m posting this just before midnight on July 20, which, since I was born at 10:32 p.m. on that date in 1959, I guess means I can no longer deny that I have turned 49 years old. I found this old hospital bill my mother saved: apparently in those days it cost $67.95 to bring …

Rehearsals have begun!

Sorry for the brief hiatus right after promising to post more. I headed up to Saskatoon on Friday and spent the day in rehearsal for Beauty and the Beast at Persephone Theatre (great cast, all-Saskatchewan–or at least all from Saskatchewan originally; it looks to be a lot of fun), and discovered I didn’t really have …

Sometimes being a freelancer sucks

Take today, for instance. I just found out that a major project I thought I would be writing has fallen through…and it was one I was really looking forward to. (No, I hasten to reassure you, not the sequel to Marseguro: as far as I know, Terra Insegura is still a go.) And it’s not …

O, Canada…

…you’re in trouble now. As of yesterday afternoon, I’m officially a Canadian citizen. And that means (ominous musical chords) I can vote! Bwa-ha-ha! At last I can exercise my evil plan to subvert Canada to my hard-line middle-of-the-road position, one vote at a time!

Well, it was nice while it lasted…

…but it turns out there was an error in my Persephone Theatre contract and I really am playing Monsier D’Arque, as I originally thought, not Maurice, in the upcoming production of Beauty and the Beast. That’s life upon the wicked stage, I guess. It makes more sense, though; I thought I would be an odd …

What did I do on my summer vacation?

I toured a nuclear power plant under refurbishment, a tour which included a rare visit (for anyone) inside the vault of a reactor. Those would be the fuel tubes, currently being replaced, in the background. That’s my lovely wife Margaret Anne beside me. The reactor is at the Bruce Power plant near Kincardine, Ontario. This …

Photo of the (Yester)Day: The Vault

Ever wonder where the Mackenzie Art Gallery keeps its collection when it’s not on display? Here: For my 48th birthday yesterday we made use of an opportunity to have some food and wine and tour the vault at the Mackenzie Art Gallery. (We bought the opportunity at a gallery fundraiser last year.) It made for …

Another reason to never even try a cigarette:

Apparently inhaling a single cigarette can be enough to trigger nicotine addiction: A new study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine shows that 10 percent of youth who become hooked on cigarettes are addicted within two days of first inhaling from a cigarette, and 25 percent are addicted within a month. The …
