Is the superconducting future almost here?

A long, long time ago–say, 1990 or so–when I was still at the Saskatchewan Science Centre, the hot technology promising us a near-magical future of levitating trains, cheap power and ultrafast computers was room-temperature superconductors. It’s been a long time coming–a lot longer than some people predicted–but it may be in sight at last.
