Research shows conservatives are nicer than liberals

I work in the arts, so I’m surrounded by people who (often without giving it much thought, I suspect) would call themselves politically liberal (usually, at least based on their Facebook profiles, “very liberal”).

Myself, I’m more a middle-of-the-road distrustful-of-extremes kind of guy (and I have the test results to prove it!). If there’s one thing that gets my back up about some of those of the liberal persuasion, though, it’s the holier-than-thou attitude they exude, the sense that they occupy the moral high ground in all things, which is why they look down on anyone who doesn’t see things exactly the way they do. (And, yes, there’s a certain strain of conservative that annoys me for exactly the same reason.)

Which is why I was so amused by this story from the U.K.’s Daily Mail, because it’s going to annoy so many people in so many delightful ways:

Don’t listen to the liberals – Right-wingers really are nicer people, latest research shows

There is plenty of data that shows that Right-wingers are happier, more generous to charities, less likely to commit suicide – and even hug their children more than those on the Left.

Yes, there seems to be little room for honest disagreement, and very little room for assuming that those who think differently might do so in good faith: might, in fact have . Instead, political opponents must be evil and/or stupid, because if they weren’t, they’d think like you.

Interesting… I find both sides of the political spectrum to think somewhat that “if you just knew what I know, you’d think like I do” about a whole host of issues… It’s very annoying…
