Boost for gene therapy?
Gene therapy–inserting genes directly into cells–holds great promise for a number of diseases, and not just genetic diseases like hemophilia (though the potential there is obvious–and the fact I wrote a book on that disease is one reason I’ve been keeping tabs on gene therapy research).
The biggest problem has been that the method of inserting genes–via a modified virus–sometimes produces dangerous immune reactions. What we need is a non-viral method of transferring genes, and that’s what this research may offer.
