Gratuitous anti-Americanism

From The Globe and Mail:

Yes, as the tributes have insisted, Brando was indeed an American icon, but that cliché needs dusting off too, and then re-examined in all its paradoxical wonder. Because, ultimately, Marlon Brando seems as complex and as simple as the country that revered and reviled him — so perceptive and so provincial, so rebellious and so reactionary, so brilliantly endowed and so fatally flawed, such an inspiring tale of promise fulfilled and such a sad story of potential wasted.

So the U.S. is “fatally flawed” and “a sad story of potential wasted.” Typical of Rick Groen, which is why I always figure anything he likes, I’ll hate, and vice-versa. So far, this philosophy has not steered me wrong.
