Reading Diary: September 11, 2004

Still plugging away at Bedlam’s Bard this week–and, I confess, enjoying it more than I did to begin with. Part of my problem with it was that the shape of the plot seemed all wrong for the thickness of the book, which resolved itself when I realized it’s really two short novels, not one. But I’m still not convinced by the lead character. He’s no longer engaging in quite as many pointless interior dialogues, but some of his actions make no sense except to drive the plot. Maybe he’s supposed to be infuriatingly naive and a little bit stupid, but he’s also supposed to be this powerful Bard…

Well, I’m enjoying it, but I still have problems with it. If anyone cares what I think, which I doubt!

I now have a big backlog of books and magazine, so I need to read more…but I confess I’ve been ODing on political blogs in the U.S. recently, especially with “Forgerygate” going on. In my professional opinion as a former small-town newspaper editor, CBS is screwed. Their credibility is gone, and they’re making it worse by not owning up to it. And Rather has just wrecked his retirement.

Sad, really.
