More space-age studying of ancient texts

I’ve written here and here about recent efforts to decipher ancient manuscripts using multi-spectral imaging, the photographing of the manuscripts under various wavelengths of light (a technique originally developed for the study of celestial bodies by spacecraft). Here’s yet another project using the same technique, this time at St. Catherine’s Monastery in the Sinai Desert, home to some of the worl’ds oldest Christian texts.

By the way, both of my previous articles used the term multi-spectral imaging. This article talks about hyperspectral imaging. As I read the difference, hyperspectral imaging uses much narrower bands of wavelengths than multi-spectral imaging, and I therefore suspect that hyperspectral imaging is actually the correct term for the application of these techniques to ancient texts. But the principle is the same.
