Bacteria that eat polystyrene

From Sciencebase:

Irish and German researchers have discovered that the soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida can eat polystyrene. This polymer, instantly recognisable in its expand form is a key component of disposable cups, and in “plastic” plates and utensils.

This is potentially good news for the environmentally friendly disposal of these things, but it reminds me of a science fiction book I read as a kid (which means it was probably written in the late 1960s or early 1970s) about the collapse of civilization caused by a strain of mutant bacteria–not one that makes people ill, but one that eats plastic
