I posted my comment on infrared technology in the wrong place.
My caution is that enhanced visibility in poor weather conditions may not help overall in reducing dangerous automobile driving. Car drivers may drive faster because they can see better ignoring the fact that road conditions dictate a lower speed for safety. Here in Alberta we experience much disaster on our highways because SUVs, 4x4s and the like do not slow down when the driving conditions deteriorate. I’m only guessing but it appears to me that these drivers feel somewhat invincible because of the types of vehicle they drive. Technology to improve visibility may not help and may even worsen the accident rates in poor weather if driving habits do not improve. If the dangerous driving habits can somehow be reduced then I will be more excited to see this technology applied to our road vehicles. In the meantime, the application to air traffic is definitely a great pursuit.
