The software orchestra…

…is coming.

Will it replace human musicians? Not yet. But it will be a boon for composers who want to hear what their orchestral arrangement sounds like without having to hire an orchestra.

And it just might be a boon for organizations like Regina Lyric Light Opera, whose largest single expense of staging a musical with a full orchestra is often musicians’ fees. Lyric, of which I was once president, might be able to live with something a little too perfect, a little too bland, if it meant the difference between going broke and continuing to be able to stage shows.

(Hmmm, posting that link to Lyric’s website made me realize it desperately needs updating…)
