As previously announced, I’ve sold a second novel to DAW Books on the basis of a synopsis. The subsequent signed contract indicates that this novel will be 100,000 words, and that it is due on December 20. This being the case, I thought it best to perhaps begin writing. Which I have done, as of today.
Which means–ta-da!–the return of “The first sentence I wrote today,” with the slight modification that this recurring Hassenpfeffer feature (Hassenpfeature?) will now feature only the first fiction sentence I write each day (and if I’m going to make my deadline, there had darn well better be some fiction writing happening every day).
Today I wrote 1,553 words, or 1.5 percent of the total. And the first sentence I wrote today, the first sentence of the first draft of a brand-new novel, was:
The main pier of Hanson’s Harbor stank, but that was only one reason Chris Keating hated it.
