Coming soon to a theatre near you…

…(if you live in Saskatoon, that is)…me! Looks like I’ll be part of the cast for Beauty and the Beast at Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon in December. Should be fun, and it’s also exciting because this will be the show that launches the brand-new downtown theatre: I gather our first preview will also be the …

Tibor Feheregyhazi, R.I.P.

Sad news from Saskatoon: Tibor Feheregyhazi, artistic director of Persephone Theatre, has died. I worked with Tibor twice, in the summer of 2000 on Tent Meeting at the Station Arts Centre in Rosthern, then later that same year at Persephone, when he cast me in Who Has Seen the Wind? He was a wonderful director …

Laurey is now Aunt Eller

This caught my eye, since I just played Jud in Regina Lyric Light Opera‘s production of Oklahoma!: Oscar-winner Shirley Jones will be featured in the Pittsburgh CLO’s upcoming staging of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic Oklahoma!, according to the theatre’s website. Oklahoma! runs through July 1st. Jones, who famously played Laurey in the 1955 film …

Queen for a Day

No, the title doesn’t refer to my upcoming performance in drag as the Mother in Class Act Studio‘s production of La Fille Mal Gardée, which is their annual ballet recital this year. (What, I haven’t mentioned that upcoming performance? Well, now I have: June 27, June 28, Riddell Centre, 7 p.m. Don’t miss it. I’ll …

Coming soon to Broadway…

Shrek: The Musical.

Two shows down, three to go

Well, we (Regina Lyric Light Opera, that is) have two performances of Oklahoma! under our belts (or suspenders, actually, for the most part) and it’s going really well. Good houses both opening night and last night, and standing ovations both nights. I’m enjoying playing Jud. We’ve humanized him quite a bit from some productions, so …

Creepy, and possibly psycopathic…that’s me!

Well, that’s me as Jud Fry in Regina Lyric Light Opera’s production of Oklahoma!, which hits the boards at the University Theatre, Riddell Centre, University of Regina this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., with additional performances Thursday at 7:30, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Even though I’ve done one or …

Ain’t it the truth…

A great quote posted at About Last Night which seems particularly apropos since I’m in the throes of rehearsing Oklahoma! (I’m playing Jud) with Regina Lyric Light Opera: “Modern kids are raised with the understanding that people don’t spontaneously burst into song at crucial moments in their lives. And isn’t that a horrible thing, to …

To keep his community theatre alive…

…a U.S. police officer stole a Canadian writer’s play. A long-time community-theatre-type myself, I can understand the panic when it looks like an organization may go under. But that’s no excuse for plagiarism.

Spiderman: The Musical?

No, seriously.

Amazing ancient acoustics accounted for

I’ve been to the ancient Greek ampitheatre at Epidaurus, built in the 4th century B.C. The acoustics really are incredible–you can hear a whisper on stage from the very top row. I was there with the Harding University A Cappella Chorus during our European tour in the summer of 1982. (Which was–gulp!–25 years ago, wasn’t …

Launching live theatre into the 22nd century

We’ve become accustomed to seeing real and virtual actors (or at least extras) blended with real and virtual sets in the movies. Now it’s being done live on stage: Using new techniques that merge the Internet 2 with traditional stage theatre, the University of Central Florida, Bradley University in Illinois and the University of Waterloo …
